2010 June 10th, Strong Heart Recording - Kyuhyun’s Talk Uncut, Unedited (transcript)

HD: We’ll introduce the next guest.
SG: Yes. Ah… we’ve waited for him a long time. Super Junior’s Maknae! Kyuhyun… Live Twice… How is it that you wrote Live Twice.
KH: Uh… This story… Talking about it is really a bit… It was really hard, but when I found out that I was coming on Strong Heart, for the first time, I’m talking about this on broadcast. It’s not something that happened to only me.
When I was 21 years old, this was three years ago. 21 years old, three years ago. April 19th, 2007. For the whole day, something felt very weird. For instance, putting my clothes on backwards… even those little things, everything was strange.
At the time, I guested on a program called Leeteuk and Eunhyuk’s Super Junior’s Kiss the Radio with Shindong, and especially that day, there was a time where the guests and DJs took pictures… but I didn’t want to take the picture with them…
So I took the picture hiding behind the three of them with only my eyes showing. So I spent that day in that weird way. After the radio, on our way back to the dorm… I had my eyes closed and I was listening to music. But suddenly, really “bang, bang, bang,” and a feeling of something swiveling… really… Yes… the car… The feeling - when you go to the amusement park, it felt like being on a roller coaster, but a rollercoaster without any safety equipment. Bang, bang, bang, and swiveling, and I lost consciousness.
After I lost consciousness, I opened my eyes, and I was on the road, lying face-down.
I didn’t know what happened and I looked up, and so far away, the car was flipped upside down… ah… there was a car accident… I felt that I had to get myself up, so I got my body up and got on my knees. But suddenly, everything went hazy in front of my eyes. Hazy and fuzzy…
SG: You were on you knees?
KH: Yes. I was on my knees. And it became fuzzy, and when you watch movies or dramas, when someone gets shot or something, before they die, they show your life flashing in front of you like a film. Everything went fuzzy, and my past flashed in front of me like a film. When I first got into elementary school, when I went on vacation with my parents and family, when I got older and met my friends, when I first got inot middle school, when I first got into the company, when I first got on stage, when I first met my fans… Everything flashed in front of me and it played like a film.
SG: In that short time, all of that flashed by…
KH: Yes… and what I thought at that moment was, “Ah… this is death”… Because I was so scared, I really wanted to live. At that time, I went to church diligently, and in my activities, I didn’t go to church for one year. And if I died, I felt like I would go to Hell… Including that young mind… Really…
SG: You had extreme thoughts?
KH: Yes… I prayed. Let me live, let me live, let me live and I’ll treasure my life. I kept praying.
And at that moment, Eunhyuk came running and he held my hands. I was crying and praying to God to let me live, and Eunhyuk prayed with me, also crying… And I found this out later, but I thought I was on my knees praying, but according to other people, I couldn’t get up and wasn’t in the position to be able to get up… But I was definitely up… Apparently none of that was possible in real life. So as I was praying, I lost consciousness and woke up, and I was at the hospital. I was unconscious for four days after the accident, then when I woke up, I was at the hospital.
SG: So was none of Eunhyuk praying with you in front of you reality?
KH: No, it was all real. I lost consciousness like that, and stayed like that for four days, and I woke up four days later.
SG: But Eunhyuk was in the same car and is okay…?
LT: Yes. Me, Kyuhyun, Shindong and Eunhyuk, the four of us were in the car together. I was in the front… (See broadcast)
I got out of the car and Kyuhyun wasn’t there. Hey, where’s Kyuhyun… We were looking for Kyuhyun, and over there, Eunhyuk was crying and he was saying this. Underneath Kyuhyun, I can’t see his legs… And I thought, oh no… Physical vision wise, it was such a dark night…
But since I was bleeding from my face, the paramedics said, “You’re hurt. You have to go quickly” and came to me first… over there in the darkness… Kyuhyun had 6 broken ribs, and didn’t have any lower body. (Everyone is perplexed)
At that point, we moved Kyuhyun to the hospital, and we didn’t know it was that serious even after we got to the hospital.
SG: When you say… no lower body…
KH: At the time, my ribs were broken and poking into my lungs. My pelvis was so hurt…
I was wearing dark pants that day and that’s why they couldn’t see my lower body… (everyone laughs)
HD: A lot of people were worried for you at the time.
SG: Since I was a singer like you, when they said there was an accident, I worried a lot.
DH: As Kyuhyun bounced out of the car, his lower body… his lower body had almost no flesh. He slid out almost 3~40m, and had almost no lower body.
HD: So how many months, years… how long after the accident were you able to stand on stage again?
KH: St…age… (thinks) I had rehab for about 3 months, and 2 months of outpatient care, and I stood on stage in 5 months. But at that point, I wasn’t fully well.
HD: But… that… didn’t you get a huge surgery?
KH: At the time, the doctors came… I was unconscious, so I don’t now, they came to my parents and the company representatives, and said, we think this kid will die very soon, if we don’t do a surgery that will pierce his neck right now…
And even if he has that surgery, his chances of survival are about 20%. If he doesn’t get that surgery, he will die. But so ridiculously, in that situation, my father said, no… this kid has to sing, is a singer, and has dreams as a singer, and if you pierce through his neck, if you take this last thing that he has left, how, even if he does, will he live the rest of his life… my father… The doctors said, aren’t you crazy? Your son is about to die, is singing that important! You must go through with the surgery! So they had a huge fight.
At that moment, a well-aged doctor like HwaTa from China… I still remember his name. Professor Wang Young-Pil… He came and scanned my chart, and said, I would find another surgery that will allow this kid to sing, so there was another surgery method, so I got a different surgery that didn’t involve piercing my neck. I heard that story and cried a lot later, because my father was so against my singing, being a singer. He runs an academy, and the father that told me that having a singer in a family of educators is unacceptable, had protected my dream when I didn’t have consciousness.
So I cried a lot. After that… After 5 months, what really gave me strength was…
At the time, my body wasn’t fully better, so I couldn’t dance. So I would come out only to sing my part and go off stage again, but from that first broadcast, and until the song was over, every time, whether or not they were fans or Super Junior, every fan would cheer for me every time I came on stage. I was so touched at that, and I felt like I was living a new life. I could sing, like I love to, I can be active with Super Juniors with the members, meet the fans, walk, eat… I was so thankful for everything. After, I felt like I got another life, and I live with thankfulness in my heart every day… Thank you so much to my father who protected my dream, everyone who prayed for me and Eunhyuk, who was the first to come and pray for me. (everyone claps)
HD: Yes… How big was the accident, that you thought you were sitting up on your knees, but your body wasn’t actually able to get up… (cut) A situation as serious as that… It really is a relief.
SG: It really is a relief.
HD: Really we… (Leeteuk cuts him off)
LT: Even there, there’s a funny episode.
(Summary - the accident was on Olympic Drive so if things got big, the accidents could have piled up so they did a quick head count and was going through a small window, the small Leeteuk and Eunhyuk got out quickly but Shindong got caught… and Eunhyuk and Shindong weren’t hurt at all, but the hospital misdiagnosed Shindong’s finger)
KH: But at the time, Leeteuk probably felt that it was very unfair. I was in critical condition, but Eunhyuk and Shindong had very minor injuries. (laugh)
SG: A few scratches? (laugh)
KH: Yes… I was in such critical condition, but Leeteuk got, what, 150 stitches, and also went through a lot of pain, but the news said, Kyuhyun in critical condition, Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, Shindong minor injuries… (everyone laughs)
KH: It’s a huge relief.
SG: It’s scary, that situation…
HD: Really, listening to Kyuhyun’s story, I reflect again. You really need to live as if every day was the last day of your life. It’s a huge relief.

We all know this. The GDA doesn’t make up half of our world and most of us have lives to attend to. I have high school and tests, I have a social life and I have to feed myself three meals a day.

But the GDA is a symbol. It’s a symbol of not only ELF’s neverending love for Super Junior, but a symbol of their hard work. The blood, sweat and tears. We aren’t going to let this go in vain. We worked harder than ever before and if we stop now, we stop everything.

Nothing has ever overcome us before. Nothing. So why stop now? Why give up when we have so much more ground to cover? Why leave all the work to someone else? WE are ELF. WE shape Super Junior’s future and WE will stop at nothing.

Selling 200,000 repackaged albums is very much posible if everyone pitches in. If you don’t have the money, that’s fine. You can always help in other ways.

Now, it’s time for Version C.

So far Super Junior has sold about 300,000 copies of Mr. Simple. They’re close to beating their previous records, and even close enough to getting that GDA. We all know they desire it. What artist wouldn’t? The Golden Daesang is a mark of history.

So with 500,000 albums as our ultimate goal, and ELF getting closer and closer every year (plus the growing population of ELFs after Kevjumba’s video, haha) we’ll be working side by side to buying those copies and helping each other get them. We’re going to take over the Hanteo charts!

It’s time to bid farewell in the most memorable way possible. It’s time to say, “See you later with no change of heart.” It’s time to keep the boys closer together for these next two years and keep their adrenaline going. Many boy bands haven’t made it pass their five year mark, and Super Junior’s getting older every single year. I have strong belief that winning this GDA will keep them together, because it will show our boys that no matter what they are the legendary Kings of Korean music.

Forget about JYJ and Girls’ Generation and whatnot. All we need is you. It all starts with an ELF and it all ends with an ELF.
